Residential Refuse, Recycling, and Yard Waste Collection

The Refuse and Recycling Division of Public Works collects refuse for single-family residential customers and some multi-family townhome properties within the City. Yard waste is collected on the same day between April 1st and December 1st.  Curbside recycling is collected on the same day as refuse and yard waste pickup by a company contracted by the City. (Flood Brothers).  The map below indicates the day service is normally provided (“Collection Day”), when there are no recognized holidays during the week.

Starting Your New Service

Residents new to the City may set up service by contacting the Finance Department at 847-394-8500. Refuse containers are the property of the City, so a City issued 35-gallon or a 65-gallon refuse container, and a recycling container issued by Flood Brothers should already be on your property. If it is not, or the refuse container is damaged, the City will provide a replacement container once free of charge.  Additional containers must be purchased by the resident.  

Refuse fees are included on your water bill, which are mailed monthly to cover the cost of this service. Storing Your Waste Until Collection Day

Generally, it is expected that all refuse, yard waste, and recycling will be stored inside a shed or garage until your designated collection day.  Any refuse, yard waste or recycling stored outside shall be located only in a side yard or rear yard, and must be screened in a manner that it is not visible from any street (Ordinance No. 12-35).

The earliest time you may set your refuse, yard waste, and recycling materials at the curb is 6 p.m. on the day before collection. During the months of November, December, January, February and March, refuse can be set out at 3 p.m. the day before collection.  

 

Collection Day Requirements

    1. All materials for refuse, yard waste and recycling for disposal must be at the curb no later than 6 a.m. on collection day.   Materials placed at the curb after 6 a.m. will not be picked up until the following week, and must be moved back inside by the resident no later than 7:00 p.m. on collection day.  
    2. Refuse must be in containers provided by the City.   Additional refuse that doesn’t fit inside the City container may be placed at the curb, but shall only be placed in strong, plastic bags that have been tied, and do not exceed 30 gallons in capacity or 50 pounds in weight when full.  Residents who routinely have excess refuse are encouraged to separate organic from non-organic waste, so that organic waste can be placed in the City-issued container to minimize damage from nuisance pests.
    3. Grass clippings and similar yard waste landscape material must be placed only in 30-gallon biodegradable paper bags, and may not exceed 50 pounds in weight when full.  Any yard waste mixed with regular household garbage will not be picked up.
    4. Branches and similar brush will only be collected if it is cut in lengths not greater than four feet, and tied securely with twine, in bundles, not to exceed two feet in diameter.
    5. Recycling must be in containers provided by the City’s contractor (Flood Brothers).  
    6. Cardboard boxes placed outside the containers at the curb must be flattened, bundled and tied securely.

 Backdoor Service

The Director of Public Works may authorize backdoor refuse, recycling and yard waste pickup for the elderly, ill and disabled if there is sufficient evidence to determine that there is an undue hardship for the resident to get the refuse, recycling or yard waste to the curb for pickup.

Bulk Item Pick-Up Services
The City provides special pick up services at rates set to recover direct costs. There is a minimum charge of $50 for all special pick-up collections.
Please call the Public Works Department at 847-963-0500 for a special pickup quote. There is no charge for the price quotation. Payment must be made prior to the special collection being made.

Lost or Damaged Carts

If lost or damaged, this cart will be replaced free, 1 time only.

About SWANCC

 

The Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) is an intergovernmental agency that was established in 1988 to facilitate the delivery of effective, competitive, and environmentally sound collection, transportation, transfer, processing, treatment, storage, disposal, recovery, and reuse of municipal waste for its members.

SWANCC serves 23 member communities with a focus on reducing the volume and toxicity of solid waste through responsible waste reduction solutions and providing environmentally sound transfer and disposal of waste that is not diverted from disposal. SWANCC meets these objectives by:
