[ARCHIVED] Keep the Wreath Red

Keep The Wreath holiday event RM fire department

The Rolling Meadows Fire Department is participating in the "Keep the Wreath Red" program during the holiday season. As you drive past the fire stations during this time, please take note of the large wreaths that are displayed on the buildings.

These wreaths will be illuminated with red lights. When a fire is determined to be caused or related to holiday decorations, one of the bulbs will be changed to white. The program is designed to remind the public of fire safety during the holiday season.

Safety tips to remember this holiday season:

  • Select only the freshest natural trees, and remember to water it daily and keep away from any heat source.
  • Use only lights and artificial trees with a UL (Underwriters Lab) listed tag. Use LED lights as they do not get as warm.
  • Discard any light strings having frayed cords or broken sockets.
  • Turn off all lights and extinguish all candles before bed and before leaving your house.
  • Avoid overloading circuits or extension cords. Check instructions provided from light strings manufacturer to determine the maximum number you may place in one outlet.
  • We discourage the use of traditional open flame candles, however if you choose to use them assure they are steady and secured so that as they burn down will not set fire to nearby objects.
  • Keep lit candles out of the reach of children.
  • Never use lighted candles on a tree or near other evergreens.
  • Place candles where they cannot be knocked down or blown over.
  • Check your smoke/carbon monoxide detectors and make sure they are in good working order. If you did not change the batteries when you changed your clocks in November, change them now.
  • For these and other fire safety tips, go to the City website hover over “Government” at the top of the page, then to the Departments drop down and click on Fire Department.

The Rolling Meadows Fire Department wishes everyone a joyous and fire safe holiday season, and remember to Keep the Wreath Red.
