Sanitary Sewer Smoke Testing

The City is working with the engineering firm RJN Group Inc., of Wheaton, IL, to perform smoke testing to identify locations where storm water is entering the City sanitary sewer system, known as inflow and infiltration. Smoke will appear where there are defects in the sewer line (usually located under the road) or laterals (connection between the main sewer line and a building) or where other connections to the sewer system exist, such as roof drains, patio drains and footing drains. A recommended plan to reduce extraneous inflow and infiltration will be prepared and presented to the City at the conclusion of the study. The project will take place during August and September.
