Alternative Reporting System

The Police Department has implemented an Alternative Reporting System to handle minor calls for service that do not require the response by field patrol personnel. This system is intended to increase the availability of patrol time through the utilization of more efficient reporting procedures.

The Alternative Reporting System is available for citizen use on a voluntary basis in select incidents under certain conditions. There are currently fifty-two types of incidents in the system. Callers who qualify for the system will be referred to one of three options instead of an immediate officer response:

  •  Mail-in Report
  •  Telephone Report
  •  Desk Report

The Alternative Reporting System is popular and convenient for many callers. The Police Telecommunications Officer will assist you in deciding the option that best suits your individual situation. Benefits include:

  •  Mail-in and desk reports are completed at your convenience.
  •  Telephone reports are made by appointment. The desk officer will return your call on the date and    time that you decide is the most convenient.

The desk officer reviews all reports received through the Alternative Reporting System. When additional follow-up is required, the incident is referred to the Patrol or Investigations Division.

Under no circumstances will a caller be denied a police officer response to their location if requested.
