The Apparatus Committee is comprised of a representative from each of the three shifts. The purpose of the Apparatus Committee is to develop vehicle specifications that best meet the needs of the department. Vehicles and apparatus are purchased in accordance with Five-Year Plans that are updated every year.

Public Works Motor Pool also plays a key role in the development of the apparatus specifications. The fire department mechanic insures that the drive train will power the vehicle, as well as the pump. His other specialty is emergency lighting and vehicle wiring. Motor Pool makes in-house repairs to the entire Fire Department fleet whenever possible, with only the most major and complex repairs handled by the apparatus builder or his designee. Mechanics and members of the on-duty shift do annual pump tests. Preventative maintenance is scheduled on a regular basis for all vehicles. Underwriter's Laboratory (UL) conducts an annual test on all aerial and ground ladders. Ambulances must pass safety checks and inspections by the Illinois Department of Public Health once each year.
